EPROM Chip Removal and Replacement

Occasionally there will be a situation that calls for NST to send a new EPROM chip to you.  The EPROM (Erasable-Programmable-Memory) is the chip inside the analyzer that contains the firmware which controls the analyzer.  If this occurs, simply follow the instructions below to replace the EPROM.

    1. Download and save any test data from the analyzer memory as it may be lost or damaged during this procedure.

    2. With the analyzer power off, remove the screws from the bottom of the analyzer.

    3. Turn the analyzer over, remove the top of the case and identify the EPROM chip.  The EPROM is the chip with the window on the top.

    4. Before removing the EPROM chip, pay special attention to its orientation in the socket.  The notch on the chip faces to the front panel of the Gas Analyzer and to the rear panel of the Receptacle Analyzer.

    5. Carefully remove the chip using an IC remover.  If you do not have an IC remover you can gently pry the chip up with a small screwdriver placed between the chip and the socket.

    6. To avoid exposing the new EPROM chip to static discharge, ground yourself before handling the EPROM.  The screw on the front of a nearby outlet or a cold water pipe are good grounds.

    7. Install the new chip in the proper direction being careful not to bend any of  the leads.  NOTE: If you have both analyzers be sure to install the appropriately marked chip into each analyzer.

    8. Turn on the analyzer to be sure that the chip is properly installed.  The analyzer display should read 'STANDING BY...' for a Receptacle Analyzer and 'PROBE:    NONE' for a Gas Analyzer.  If the analyzer powered up properly proceed to step 9.  If the analyzer did not power up, check to see that the chip is installed in the proper direction and that none of the leads are bent.  If at this time you are still experiencing a problem please contact NST.

    9. If the analyzer powered up properly replace the top of the case and install the screws.  NOTE: The case has a tongue and groove design and will go together properly in one direction only.

    10. After replacing the EPROM chip, clear the analyzer memory of any potentially erroneous data.  Do this by beginning a data transmission and then disconnecting the analyzer to computer cable after communication has been established.  This occurs when the analyzer display reads 'SENDING BLOCK   001'.  Erase the memory when prompted by the analyzer.

    11. Please return the old EPROM chip to NST as soon as possible using the original packaging.
